‧Select relevant moments in Pseudolus to discuss the characteristics of a meta-drama.

Pseudolus was regarded as a successful meta-drama nowadays for several reasons, not merely because the writing year was long before the concept of meta-drama came out, but also the innovation of comody. More precisely speaking, the elements and the technique used in the play, such as the self-awareness of the characters, the redifinition of the play by auther himself, also the twist of storyline all break through the tradional frame of the drama. Consist of these amazing part, no wonder Pseudolus would be highly praised.

Here I picked some part of the play to explain the distinguishing feature mentioned above. First, there're numerous dialogue reveal the self-awareness of the character. Calidorus once said: "That's all nonsense, there's no pleasure in love unless you can play the fool." and also Ballio: I fudged, I normally do." We can find the character know exactly what they're doing instead of just playing the role. Scilicet, they had awared that they're in the character but not the characters themselves. Plautus played with the stock character obviously, since the audience, so do the actors, had already known the shape, manner, behavior of the stock characters. Even the sentences the characters may take can be guessed. The actors can tease and taunt the roles when they were onstage. The actors had three quite different identy, one is the character they played, another the actors themselves, and the other they meanwhile are the audience, curious of what might be going on. That's the self-awareness of the characters.
